Another Afghan insider shooting as U.S. talks to Karzai

KABUL (Reuters) - Another NATO soldier was killed on Sunday by an Afghan police officer, raising the coalition death toll from so-called "green on blue" shootings to nine in 11 days as the United States urged Kabul to step up screening of recruits.

The growing insider threat has eroded trust between NATO and its Afghan allies, causing a headache for Western powers who are planning to pull out most of their troops by the end of 2014.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Afghan President Hamid Karzai agreed to boost vetting of Afghan recruits to try to put an end to the spiraling attacks, now averaging one a week and far surpassing last year's toll.

Panetta also urged the president during a telephone call to work with NATO to boost counterintelligence efforts and speak more to village elders who have ties to the army and police, the Pentagon said in a statement.

"They expressed shared concern over this issue and agreed that American and Afghan officials should work even more closely together to minimize the potential" for future attacks, it added.

The latest killing took place in the Spin Boldak district of southern Kandahar. Another foreign solder was wounded. Provincial officials said early inquires showed no sign of Taliban involvement.

Two U.S. special forces were shot dead on Friday by an Afghan militia member in western Farah province just as reclusive Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar boasted that insurgents had successfully infiltrated security forces.

With Sunday's shooting, this year's death toll of NATO forces and contractors killed by their Afghan partners stands at 38 in 31 incidents compared to 35 dead in 21 attacks for all of 2011.

BAMIYAN BOMB

Adding to the carnage at the start of the three-day Eid festival ending Ramadan, three New Zealand soldiers were killed by an improvised bomb in northeast Bamiyan, thought to be the country's safest province until a string of recent attacks.

NATO's top commander in Afghanistan, U.S. General John Allen, last week ordered all coalition forces to carry a loaded magazine in their weapons at all times on base after six Marines were killed on August 10 in two separate insider shootings.

Field commanders have also been given discretion to increase numbers of so-called "guardian angel" sentries who oversee foreign soldiers in crowded areas such as gyms and food halls, to respond to any rogue shooting incidents.

"Commanders always have the ability to do whatever they think is right depending on their tactical situation," said a NATO official who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of security arrangements.

The attack on the New Zealand soldiers in rugged Bamiyan province, meanwhile, underscored the growing reach of insurgents in a area thought until recently to be largely safe.

Two other New Zealand soldiers were killed and six wounded on August 5 in an insurgent attack blamed on a small band of hardcore militants said to have infiltrated the province to undermine security, targeting foreign and Afghan security forces. New Zealand has now lost 10 soldiers in Afghanistan.

Bamiyan was a focus of world attention in March 2001 when Afghanistan's former Taliban government destroyed two colossal sandstone Buddhas carved into cliffs, targeting the 1,700 year-old statues with tank and anti-aircraft guns, as well as dynamite, because they were un-Islamic.

The province, where most people belong to the Hazara ethnic group, opposed to the Pashtun-dominated Taliban, is in the Hindu Kush mountains around 240 km (150 miles) northwest of Kabul.

Though infrequent bombings and sporadic attacks have taken place, the government had been working on making the province - home to the Bande Amir chain of lakes - a center for tourism, with security provided by Afghan police and a small number of soldiers from New Zealand.

Bamiyan was one of the first provinces to be handed over to Afghan security forces in July 2011, with around 1,000 lightly armed Afghan police and intelligence forces based there, but no Afghan soldiers.

Relationship between marriage and alcohol examined

ScienceDaily (Aug. 18, 2012) ? New research examining relationships and the use of alcohol finds that while a long-term marriage appears to curb men's drinking, it's associated with a slightly higher level of alcohol use among women. The study, led by the University of Cincinnati (UC), was presented at the 107th Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association.

Based on survey data and interviews, the authors revealed that married men reported consuming the lowest number of drinks, compared with single, divorced, and widowed men. That's in part because of their wives' lower levels of drinking, write the authors. Men also were more likely than women to turn to drinking after a divorce.

On the other hand, the researchers found that married women consumed more drinks than long-term divorced or recently widowed women, in part because they lived with men who had higher levels of alcohol use.

The authors of the study are Corinne Reczek, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Cincinnati; Tetyana Pudrovska, an assistant professor of sociology and demography at The Pennsylvania State University; Deborah Carr, a professor of sociology at Rutgers University; and Debra Umberson, a professor of sociology at University of Texas at Austin.

The researchers analyzed survey data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study to explore population trends in the relationship between marriage and alcohol. They also analyzed data from two in-depth interview studies, the Marital Quality Over the Life Course Project, conducted between 2003-2006, and the Relationships and Health Habits Over the Life Course Study, conducted between 2007-2010.

The researchers also found that:

? In each marital status category, men consumed a greater average number of drinks than women.

? Across every marital status category, a higher proportion of men than women also reported having at least one drinking-related problem.

? Recently divorced men reported consuming a significantly greater average number of drinks than men in long-term marriages.

? Reporting at least one drinking-related problem was significantly higher among long-term divorced and recently divorced women than long-term married women.

The researchers gauged alcohol consumption by total number of drinks consumed in a month.

The researchers suggest that future research should examine more closely how widowhood shapes alcohol use over time, as well as explore alcohol use differences across race-ethnicity.

The study was supported by funding in part from the National Institutes of Aging.

About the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (WLS)

The WLS is a long-term survey of 10,317 men and women who graduated high school in 1957. Respondents were interviewed during their senior year in high school, as well as at age 35-36 (in 1975), 53-54 (in 1993) and 64-65 (2004). The UC study was based on the analysis of 5,305 respondents, including 2,439 men and 2,866 women -- participants in a random sample of the WLS that received questions about alcohol use. The respondents were primarily white.

The Martial Quality Over the Life Course Project

The Martial Quality Over the Life Course Project involved 60 in-depth interviews conducted between 2003-2006, with 30 heterosexual couples who had been married for at least seven years. Spouses were interviewed separately. The UC study examined responses to open-ended questions exploring how the transition into marriage, as well as being married, influenced both spouses' alcohol use. The average age of respondents was 53 years, and their average marriage duration was 25 years. Respondents were white (52), African-American (six), Asian-American (one), and Latina (one). Interviews were conducted in a mid-size southwestern city.

The Relationships and Health Habits Over the Life Course Study

The Relationships and Health Habits Over the Life Course Study involved 60 in-depth interviews conducted between 2007-2010. The UC study analyzed responses from 10 married men and nine married women; 14 divorced men and 13 divorced women; four never-married men and six never-married women; one widowed man and three widowed women. The UC study examined responses related to alcohol use in the transition to marriage, divorce or widowhood -- as well as how being married, divorced, or widowed influenced alcohol use over time. Half of the respondents were African-American and half were white. Their ages ranged from 25-89, with an average age of 53. Interviews were conducted in a mid-size southwestern city.

The paper, "Marital Status, Marital Transitions, and Alcohol Use: A Mixed-Methods Study," was presented on Aug. 19 in Denver, Colorado, at the American Sociological Association's 107th Annual Meeting.

Actress Danica McKellar Helps "Girls Get Curves"

Copyright ? 2012 National Public Radio. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

FLORA LICHTMAN, HOST:

Up next, math books get a makeover. You may remember my next guest from her acting roles on "The Wonder Years." Winnie Cooper may ring a bell or "The West Wing." But for thousands of girls today, she's the writer and personality behind a bestselling series of books that aim to teach girls about math. First, there was "Math Doesn't Suck," then "Hot X: Algebra Revealed," and now we're onto geometry.

Actress and author Danica McKellar's latest book is called "Girls Get Curves: Geometry Takes Shape," and she joins me here in our New York studio. And I should also mention that Danica is on the board of the Science Friday Initiative. Thanks for coming in today.

DANICA MCKELLAR: Oh, thank you for having me.

LICHTMAN: Welcome back.

MCKELLAR: Thanks.

LICHTMAN: So the title of this book, "Girls Get Curves," is pretty sassy for a math book.

MCKELLAR: Yeah. Actually, you missed one other title: "Kiss My Math."

LICHTMAN: Oh. So they have a sassy - the whole history of sass.

MCKELLAR: They tend to be sassy. Well, kind of the point of the books is to present math in a way that's different from what we usually see. Math can be dry and boring when taught in certain ways, and it can also be very interesting.

And so I teach math in the context of things that preteens and teenage girls are already thinking about, like shopping and makeup and pizza and puppies and - you know, I'm a big believer of the more education feels like kindergarten, the more you retain. So why not teach math...

LICHTMAN: Make it fun.

MCKELLAR: Yeah. Math is a language. You can talk about anything in the language of math. You can talk about boring things. You can talk about fun things.

LICHTMAN: Do you feel like your books have a larger mission beyond just teaching girls the subject at hand?

MCKELLAR: Absolutely. I would love to inspire the next generation of mathematicians and scientists, but my main goal is to give girls the confidence that comes from feeling smart and the confidence that comes from knowing that they can handle challenges.

So whether it be a difficult math problem or something else, they can say, wow, I'm not sure if I can do that, and then they work at it, they persevere and they overcome it. And now they've taught themselves that they are stronger and smarter than they thought they were.

When I was in the seventh grade, I used to come home literally and cry because I was afraid of my math homework. I know how painful and frustrating math can be. And then, midway through that year, a teacher came in who completely changed my perspective on math. She made math fun and friendly. She put a friendly face on it.

And that's when I realized, for the first time, that math is all about the way it's taught, all the way - it's all about the way it's translated, and the way you present math can make all the difference to girls and boys.

LICHTMAN: Yeah. I mean, I think that the thing that really strikes me about your books is that they are really friendly. You know, (unintelligible).

MCKELLAR: Yeah. It's like I'm sitting down. Hey, look, I know how you're feeling. I remember that, but here's how it works. It's not so big a deal. And I'm going to teach it to you using pizzas or bird seed - (unintelligible) bird seed and little birds. All sorts of crazy, random things.

And, of course, I stick in other stuff along the lines of giving girls confidence in life. I have tons of advice about stress relief and self-esteem boosting and - I mean, I remember those years, those teenage years. They are full of angst and confusion, and you've got hormones rushing through your body. I lived that era twice. I lived it in real life and I lived it on television. And I kept a journal.

LICHTMAN: Yeah, double the punishment.

MCKELLAR: Yeah, exactly, double or triple. I wrote in a journal. I wrote everything, and I refer to the journals often when I'm writing my books.

LICHTMAN: You still have them.

MCKELLAR: Oh, yes, yes.

LICHTMAN: Oh, man. I don't want to go back and look at my journal.

MCKELLAR: It is - it's hard. It's like, oh, my gosh, the feeling of that overwhelming angst, oh, is he going to call, you know?

(LAUGHTER)

LICHTMAN: Well, we are going to talk a lot more about this after the break. I'm talking with Danica McKellar about her latest book on geometry, so stay with us. And if you have questions, call us: 1-800-989-TALK, 1-800-989-TALK. I'm Flora Lichtman, and this is SCIENCE FRIDAY from NPR.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

LICHTMAN: This is SCIENCE FRIDAY, and I'm Flora Lichtman talking with Danica McKellar. And if you have a question for Danica McKellar, now is your chance. 1-800-989-8255 is our number, 1-800-989-8255. So how did you like geometry? I mean, you've done algebra and pre-algebra. What - was there something - did you like it? Was it different?

MCKELLAR: Yeah, it was really fun writing this book. It's more visual naturally, so there are a lot of more diagrams. And in a lot of the diagrams, I'll actually pick letters. I chose letters to spell out words. I don't really talk about it. Somebody happens to notice.

(LAUGHTER)

MCKELLAR: So there's a lot - just a lot of other things you can do with geometry.

LICHTMAN: You can get a flavor of the book on our website at sciencefriday.com. We've got an excerpt up. I think sciencefriday.com/curves is the shortened version.

MCKELLAR: Oh, nice.

LICHTMAN: So, you know, the interesting thing about this book is that you take on - as you said before the break, you sort of take on girl life generally, and I wanted to ask you, why did you - why do you go that far? In other words, you know, why combine things like body image with geometry?

MCKELLAR: I write - there's four books now that I've written, starting with "Math Doesn't Suck" for middle-schoolers. I'm writing books that I wish that I had. You know, as a teenage girl, you tend to be obsessed with things that are pretty superficial, whether it be, like, how you look or, you know, how popular you are. And so I really wanted to address those things. I used to love looking at teen magazines at that age. And let's face it, even as young women, there's something sort of, like, seductive about these women's magazines that are just full of fluff. And so I thought, well, you know, let's combine all that.

Let's make this a really fun math book so it's not so mathy(ph). So we really addressed all the stuff that girls were thinking about. And my thinking is, you know, the girls who may be interested in math but don't have long attention span for it, they're flipping through the book, they're doing the exercise and then they say, oh, there's a body image quiz. Let me see that. Let me take that quiz. Let me see how I do on it.

And then there'll be a little section about how to outsmart advertisements, you know, like when something says 30 percent more than our competition. You're like, well, OK, how much does the competition's product cost? You know, like, be smarter than the advertisements you're looking at. There are tons of random things in there to help girls feel smart and improve their smarts and improve their savviness in the world.

LICHTMAN: You know, a big problem, I think, for girls today is that they see these magazines and, you know, one of the excerpts in your book that I really love was like, do you want to look like a magazine model? Get a friend to take a picture of you and then get it airbrushed.

MCKELLAR: Right. That's right.

(LAUGHTER)

LICHTMAN: Because no one really looks like that, right?

MCKELLAR: Right.

LICHTMAN: So how do you convince girls that it doesn't really matter, you know, that these sort of superficial things don't matter?

MCKELLAR: Well, here's the thing: I don't try to tell them that it doesn't - that they don't matter. They matter on some level. When you walk into a job, your potential boss is going to look you up and down, and in 20 seconds, judge whether or not you're the kind of person who takes care of herself. Do you know how to present yourself to the, you know, to the future clients of that business? And so, yes, appearance is important. But it's just the decoration. It's just the icing on a cake. It's not the stuff that's going to make you happy.

So that's why that stuff is acknowledged in the book. And I even have tips about posture, how if you have good posture - I forget what page it's on - it changes your outfit. It changes how the outfit looks on you. And that is connected to your confidence, in the way you present yourself in the world. So that stuff is important but it's only one element. The bigger element in terms of you becoming a fabulous young woman someday is having that confidence that comes from feeling smart and tackling things like math.

LICHTMAN: Well, do you worry that - for girls who don't think too much about this or who struggle with body image or weight, do you worry that they - how they'll react to this or how this book affects them?

MCKELLAR: I think it's positive on all levels. I really emphasize balance in the book. I have ideas for healthy snacks. You know, if it is about your body image, it's about balance. You don't want to become obsessed with it. You don't want to try to become super skinny. You also don't want to make a bunch of excuses for being 300 pounds. Let's be healthy. Let's give ourselves some right exercise and healthy food because, you know, your mind and your body work better when you treat it well.

LICHTMAN: Did you do - did you have to do research for this book? In other words, do you have like secret agents in the field of high school who are giving you intel?

(LAUGHTER)

MCKELLAR: I have people who help me gather quotes. I've got teachers around the country who gathers quotes from students. I always send out surveys and - so you'll see a lot of quotes from kids throughout the books, and that's where they come from. Yeah, tons of research. I talk to teachers, tons of teachers, asking them what it's like in the classroom, what did their kids struggle with the most in this particular subject in this day and age. And yeah, no, there's a long period before I actually start writing.

LICHTMAN: Let's go to the phones. How about Edwin in (unintelligible) New Jersey? Do you have a question?

EDWIN: Yeah. Hi, Danica. I'm a huge fan.

MCKELLAR: Thank you.

EDWIN: I was just wondering, like, what's your stand on education (unintelligible) and, like, where do you see it going, especially because, you know, you talk a lot about how math and science are, you know, this could be taught in, like, a dreadful manner. Like where do you see - like what kind of methods can be done to make education reform happen in a way to make science and math more interesting for students?

MCKELLAR: Well, I know right now a lot of teachers are in a very difficult position to make their subjects more interesting because they're given such limited time and such a strict focus on here's what you have to teach. And there are, you know, there are lot of standardized tests now that they're teaching for. And it's very difficult. So for me, I've never tried to get involved in the political side of the educational system. For me, the reform comes from the outside in, from these books, the supplemental help. And there's a lot of resources online. There's my books. There's other ways of making it more interesting. And hopefully it's an opportunity for parents to get involved with their kids' education as well.

LICHTMAN: Thanks for calling, Edwin. So part of your books are about teaching girls to sort of figure out who they are, which is, you know, I remember that confusing time.

MCKELLAR: Yeah.

(LAUGHTER)

LICHTMAN: Did you have a moment with math, I mean, you know, you'd - you are so famous for your work on "The Wonder Years." What happened with - how did you switch over into math and was that sort of an a-ha moment for you?

MCKELLAR: Absolutely. No, because - we all know that ex-child actors tend to have some struggles with self-image. And I definitely had the question in my mind once "The Wonder Years" ended - who am I now? What is my value? And right at that moment it was wrapped up a lot in the superficiality of Hollywood and being famous.

And I came to UCLA within a few months of the show ending and became - like took a math class. I just - I was actually worried about taking a math class. I didn't know that I'd be able to handle it. And here I scored a five on an AP Calculus BC exam. Talk about perceptions. I didn't see myself as being good at math even though I was. And that's one of the things I'm tackling in the books. But when I did jump into that math class, despite my concerns and my fears, I did really well and I was hooked.

I was like, wow, I suddenly felt valued and important for something that had nothing to do with Hollywood. It had everything to do with something that I was building from the inside out, and you don't have to have been on television to struggle as a teenage girl with your self-image. And that's why I know that math is an amazing tool for all girls to find themselves, to find something that they value themselves for.

LICHTMAN: Hmm. We're just about out of time but I wanted to ask you, I heard you're doing an interview - I think it was with Jimmy Kimmel - and you talked about what it was like in college when you were entrenched in that math work. And you'd wake up in the middle of the night and...

MCKELLAR: Yes.

LICHTMAN: ...do problems on the blackboard. Do you miss that kind of intensity of math doing?

MCKELLAR: Yeah. Absolutely. And I love math and I still do(ph). And I miss all the highfalutin ideas and conceptual things that used to be buzzing around in my head. But writing these math books is an amazing combination of my entertainment world with my love of math. And what's interesting is I always sit down and go, OK, how am I going to make this dry topic really interesting? What's the cool, fun thing that I'm going to attach to it to really help teach it? And I'll wake up in the middle of the night with an idea for that. So that stuff still happens.

LICHTMAN: That's nice to hear. Thanks, Danica, for coming in today. Appreciate it.

MCKELLAR: My pleasure.

LICHTMAN: Danica McKellar is an actress and a math education advocate. Her newest book is called "Girls Get Curves: Geometry Takes Shape."

10 Things The Music Industry Has Taught Me About Being a Parent ...

04 300x300 10 Things The Music Industry Has Taught Me About Being a ParentMusic is life. Life is music. It?s a mantra that around here, rings very true. One that we covet and fawn over and?incorporate?into our daily lives. Without music, our lives would be void of much joy. Much learning, much beauty, art, and personal introspection.

It?s a matter of personal taste really, and mine runs the gamut. I grew up in a home where music was revered and I evolved (in many, MANY stages), to have a deep and abiding love for the world, art, and music. It?s so cliche, but obviously this ahem, ?connection? if you will, ran from torrid love affairs with musicians to immersing myself in the industry.

No, not as a band-aid. Well, maybe?briefly?? but that?s another story.

It?s rather obvious, I suppose, that I ended up working as a manager in the industry (however brief), and with a musician for a partner. Or that I somehow ended up becoming a social media consultant and administrator to brands in the music industry. Some of my best friends are intelligent, thought-provoking, genius musicians. Not all the stage is sex, drugs and rock and roll. At least not all the time. There are many musicians who have families, who are either self-educated or those who hold high academic credentials. There are many who are social and cultural advocates, who use their voice to make the world a better place.

And before you go all gangbusters on me and call my a hippie or some other less-than-original characterization, watch this documentary. Then tell me that music doesn?t have immense power and ability to change things for the better. Or make you a better parent.

Check out the Top 10 Things the Music Industry Has Taught Me About Being a Parent?

    To Say Goodbye to Stereotypes

When we break free of the stereotypical parental units, we rail against the misconceptions of lowered expectations. Having children changes most people philosophically, I believe, for the better. The same applies to yes, *GASP* dirty rock and or rollers.

    Share in the Workload

It's our job to share the parental workload. Whether the mister was out till the wee hours gigging, or I was at an event or a concert tweeting and Instagramming away for a band, someone has to wake up stupid early and make an effort to feed, water, and play with our kids. Even though we may be dead tired, taking turns and sharing the day-to-day drudgery of filling up the dishwasher, sweeping the floor, picking up toys (for the zillionth time) and turning the laundry over, etc. -- we help take the pressure off each other.

    Making It Work

When I think about the choice between working in the music industry and having a musician partner who tours frequently or having a classic-type family (husband who works the 9-5 out of the home), there is no choice. Sure I reflect, but mostly based upon societal expectations of what a family should be. It's imperative that even on the days where I'm exhausted from pulling double-duty on my own, mid-stream during a 2 week tour, that I remember not to dismiss what a good dad my children have. That we chose this life and that we BOTH make sacrifices to lead as such. He misses us, me -- immensely when he's away.

    Sacrifice

The music industry is a highly self-centred business. As a parent, you don't have much time for that. We are always thinking about each other as a whole. We try harder. How we can be together as much as possible, how we can go on the road together instead of being apart. Of course, this all comes with many challenges. As those of you know -- traveling with toddlers? Not for the faint of heart.

    Shiny Objects

You know that feeling when you hear a really good song? Or better yet -- the lyrics of a song, coupled with the groove and the harmony -- whether it's funky, sexy, or sublime (think folk); when it all just gels for you and it becomes your new (or old) favourite song? Parenthood is like that. That feeling of your flesh raised with tiny goosebumps when your child calls you mama, or takes their first steps, or says, "I love you." The feeling in one's soul between riding a good wave of sonic bliss and a sweet parenting moment is almost identical.

    To Stay Organized

Life can get WAY chaotic. For all parents. Now, I'm not trying to say it is more so for us, but when both parents are each juggling two different types of careers, and one involves a lot travel away from the family and late nights, well, things can get out of control really fast if we don't stay organized. If we don't stay on top of the littlest of things like laundry, weekly chores, running errands and grocery shopping, we're done for. Everything always has to be planned out way in advance, our schedules have to constantly be aligned and in-sync. Constant communication is vital. So yes, I am saying that musicians and their entourage, especially the parent-kind, we're HELLA organized.

There Are & There Aren't Many Awards

Much like the music industry, not all of those with astounding talent are winning all the awards. Good parenting wins you no medals, gets you no prizes ... from your peers, or other parents anyways. It's hard ass work, the music industry, much like parenting. You have to seek and find satisfaction within oneself, by making your art, or in rearing your children. The love your fans/your children dote upon you is the best prize of all. (Cheese, but true.)

    Everything Takes Longer

Recording an album when you have a young family? It takes longer. Doing anything when you have kids, it all takes longer. You can't ride creative waves for days on end, holed up in the studio when you have children to care for.

You work even harder to produce something of quality. Something your kids can be proud of, perhaps learn from and be involved in. Involving children in music from a young age has been researched to be beneficial in providing a stimulating environment that can and does support children's healthy growth and development.

Every Little Thing Is Going to Be Alright

In the words of the late great Mr. Marley himself - no matter how whack, how crazy, how challenging parenting can get - if you work hard and follow your instincts (or develop your talent/musicianship if we're talking about the music industry), everything is going to be okay. Often more-so.

Blacks More Prone to Hypertension After Certain Strokes

Researchers not sure why racial gap exists.

THURSDAY, Aug. 16 (HealthDay News) ? Blacks who survive brain bleed strokes are more likely than their white peers to have high blood pressure a year later, new research reveals.

Intracranial hemorrhages represent about 10 percent of all strokes, but about four in 10 of these strokes lead to death in the first month. The study authors pointed out that high blood pressure is a critical modifiable risk factor for a bleeding stroke.

?If you have already had a stroke, blood pressure treatment can reduce your chance of having another stroke by between 25 and 50 percent,? study author Dr. Darin Zahuranec, an assistant professor of neurology at the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center, in Ann Arbor, said in a journal news release.

Zahuranec and his colleagues discuss their findings in the Aug. 16 issue of Stroke.

To explore racial differences among bleeding stroke patients, the authors focused on 162 such stroke patients who were receiving care at Georgetown University Medical Center, in Washington, D.C.

No racial differences were seen in terms of blood pressure a month after the initial stroke, the team noted.

However, when looking at a year out the team found that among the more than half that had high blood pressure, 63 percent were black and just 38 percent were white.

What?s more, the authors noted that racial spread had unfolded despite the fact that more blacks than whites took medication to manage their blood pressure.

The authors could not say what is driving the observed racial differences. However, they further noted that key social differences were also at play (with married and facility-residing patients having lower blood pressure than single and home residents), and that other such variables may explain the apparent racial gap.

?Blood pressure is not just about taking medications,? Zahuranec said. ?Patients can have a very large impact on blood pressure control by making changes to diet and exercise habits, and with weight loss. We need to do more for our patients to help them get their blood pressure under control.?

Dr. David B. Whitlock: When it comes to marriage, religion matters

Dr. David B. Whitlock: When it comes to marriage, religion matters

When it comes to marriage, religion matters

It?s wedding season; May through August are the most popular months for marriage ceremonies. While planning a wedding, depending on the elaborateness of the ceremony and number of guests attending, can involve months of preparation---thriving in a marriage is a lifelong project, filled with challenges. Somebody said in marriage there are three rings:? engagement ring, wedding ring, and suffering. One of the most important aspects of a successful marriage is often overlooked and that is the role religion plays in a marriage, or to be more accurate, the dynamic of spirituality in loving relationships. The recent split between Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, with his commitment to the Church of Scientology supposedly having a role in her decision to divorce, is a stark reminder that in marriage, religion does matter. The reason religion matters is because we are not only physical and emotional beings but spiritual ones as well. When we disregard that aspect of ourselves, we neglect something real and vital to our wholeness and wellness. As the French Jesuit priest and philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin put it, ?We are not physical beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a physical experience.?Physical, emotional, and spiritual intimacy are all essential to a fulfilling relationship where two people become one while maintaining their unique identities. In Couples who Pray, authors Squire Rushnell and Louis DuArt challenge couples to pray together aloud for five minutes a day for 40 days, promising that the deeper level of spiritual intimacy will lead to a more fulfilling sex life. The authors maintain that love making, romance, and conversation increase 20-30% when couples practice praying aloud together and fear of divorce diminishes to 0%.I?m not interested in the quality of Holmes? and Cruise?s intimate life. However, Cruise?s commitment to his faith and Holmes? apparent lack of the same appears to have created a rift.Holmes was raised a Roman Catholic. Whether her conversion to Scientology was sincere and deliberate or a cavalier decision made in the heat of romance may be argued by both parties. According to Us Weekly, Holmes is fed up with Scientology?s rules and its demands of child rearing. The couple has one daughter, six-year old, Suri. The venture of enjoying an intimate spiritual relationship within a marriage when the couple has totally different religious beliefs requires understanding, respect, and tolerance on the part of both people. The more convinced one partner is that his/her religious beliefs are the only legitimate expression of spirituality, the more problematic any unity becomes and the more likely the prospects are for a conflicted relationship. It's usually when children come into the picture that suppressed reservations of the other partner?s beliefs emerge. Tom Cruise is a devout member of Scientology, which maintains that our problems began 75 million years ago when Xenu, dictator of the ?Galactic Confederacy,? brought alien beings to our planet, placed them in volcanoes around the world, then vaporized them with hydrogen bombs, scattering the beings? spiritual essences across the atmosphere until they attached themselves to humans, harming us spiritually, resulting in a plague of psychological and social problems, maladies from which only Scientology can free us through a process called auditing. When it comes to religion, you might say Tom is from Galactica; Katie is from Rome. Mark Ebner, who has reported on celebrities and Scientology for 15 years, said on the Today Show, ?When it comes to Hollywood couplings within Scientology, either you?re in or out. There?s no half measures there. If you?re out, the marriage is as good as over.? To be sure, couples of different religions can have fulfilled, intimate marriages. And couples with identical religious beliefs can have failed ones. But all things being equal, the closer a couple is spiritually, the easier it is to find intimacy at other levels as well, with each strengthening the next. Until two unique individuals, one from Mars the other from Venus, find themselves gradually becoming as one on Earth.

When I Decided To Become ?A Writer? ? Word Salad

I had always been a storyteller, ever since I could talk, though when I was young, I could say very little due to a speech impediment. Maybe I told stories to only myself before I ever learned to give the stories to others, like ghetto-wrapped gifts, the corners of loose leaf paper sticking out the edges of the package.

Maybe the lack of speaking much or the lack of friends not speaking resulted in propelled me to read constantly, almost ferociously, as if I were in contest with every other six year old. I remember being incredibly proud in first grade of having read Harry Potter and the Philosopher?s Stone when most kids my age could not read at all. So maybe it was only natural that by age eleven, I finally announced I would be a writer.

While my parents sat watching some sitcom on TV, I marched into the room and announced my plan. I would write a book, I said, and then I would publish it. At the age of eleven, I possessed very little actual knowledge of the publishing industry. I believed that once I wrote the book, I needed only send it to ?The Publisher? so he could sell it for millions of dollars. Then I would drop out of school and never have to deal with stupid long division again or memorize the capitals of all the states or write in cursive (why did we do that again? I still can?t write in cursive.)

At the time, the family shared a desktop computer in my parents? room, and any time they were not paying taxes or my brother wasn?t loading extremely long movies, I would write. I was not just going to be another kid who liked to write, either. I?d be a WRITER, which would mean I was published. Now, as you get older, the level of publishing changes. For example, I have now published some short stories, poems, and numerous journalistic articles, but that makes me a WRITER, not an AUTHOR. And maybe, I also would like to be an AUTHOR soon. Still, I charged on ahead with unbridled optimism that I could write better than at least most eighth graders.

By now, I had already given up on ?kid novels.? If anyone was to take me seriously as a writer, I needed to read the great classics. I?m not sure I read anything else until maybe ninth grade. In a way, this helped immensely, immersing myself in such great works of literature so young. Now, however, I often return to comic books and YA novels because they are really fantastic, and why didn?t I read these while it was socially acceptable to do so? Oh well, I?ll make up for it now.

Also, when I began writing this novel which had something to do with a guy named Mr. Capri and a guy name Mr. Paradox collecting jewels to become magical and evil, I used 24-point font. Obviously, by using such large font, I could write more pages and therefore be seen as more intelligent and impressive.

?Derek, you wrote a 300 page novel??

?Yes, I actually wrote ten novels.?

Fifth grade: the year of a ten novel series, each maybe ten thousand words each. Then again, combine all these, and at least I wrote something truly novel-length. Of course I would go on to try to write many more novels over the year, roughly a different project each year. I learned to query and all about publishing, and I began building credentials from shorter things I had written. Eventually, I started this blog and wrote a new novel that I?m quite excited about and may actually be worth publishing.

Back to fifth grade?

Most of the names did not stick, although Mr. Paradox was probably the best?villain?name ever. My main character, I named Declin. I asked my mom what a good name would be. She was reading a book by an author named Declan, so she simply told me that. I misspelled the name, of course, and that spelling stuck with me. I vowed back in the fifth grade to use ?Declin? as a character name in whatever novel I published first. I held myself true to my word at eleven. Go check yourself: new novel, same name.

But I am still proud of myself for that feat. Fifth grade ain?t easy for anyone, especially someone just then learning to speak properly and socialize with, you know, ?other people.? This story does not signify anything, only it tells a story. Sometimes stories must be told, though. Sometimes, I am arrested by the need to tell a story, say something, so I sit down and write it, even if it might not mean something. Perhaps that even more than wanting to be taken seriously, that caused me to transcribe that first battle of good and evil between Declin and Mr. Paradox.

Maybe even today, I?m still telling stories just to tell them, not because they might mean something, the themes bold and life-changing. But simply because they are stories, and when you?re a writer and have a story to tell, you can?t not tell it.

Proposed New Rules For Home Loans May Affect FHA Mortgages ...

FHA loan news

The Washington Post and Bloomberg News are reporting on a set of proposed rule changes by the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau that will, if implemented, change the way banks and customers interact on FHA loans, conventional mortgages and VA guaranteed loans.

According to an article on WashingtonPost.com, the proposed regulations would ?go beyond the standards for mortgage servicing that state attorneys general wrote into a court settlement reached with major banks on March 12? and the measures would also modify existing rules in the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA).

At the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CFPB) official site, you?ll find a list of proposed changes which includes a requirement for monthly mortgage statements with clear details on loan amounts, the amount due, and how payments are applied to the principal and interest.

There is also a proposed requirement for interest rate adjustment warnings?as much as half a year or more notice ?before the first rate adjustment, as well as earlier and improved notices before rate adjustments causing an increase in a consumer?s mortgage payments.?

Another major improvement is listed as ?prompt crediting of payments?. According to the CFPB official site, the new rule would require payments to be applied the day they are received. Additionally, ?the handling of partial payments is clarified.?

There are also proposed changes to how banks would be required to deal with delinquent FHA, conventional, and VA loans. ?Delinquent borrowers will be able to contact the right people at their servicer to get information and take steps to avoid foreclosure?? and ?Servicers would be required to appropriately review borrower applications for loan modifications or other options to avoid foreclosure,? according to CFPB.

These, and other changes listed on the CFPB site are not yet official?they are under review until October, 2012. If and when they are implemented after the review period, several federal laws such as RESPA, the Dodd-Frank Act and others will be amended to include the new requirements.

Scots see off Australia

Scotland had to come from behind as they warmed up for their World Cup qualification matches next month with a 3-1 win over Australia at Easter Road.

Australia felt they should have been given an early penalty when Danny Fox appeared to block Aston Villa's Brett Holman's shot on the line with his hand.

However, their complaints were silenced seconds later when Mark Bresciano's sensational dipping volley from 20 yards handed them the lead.

Scotland were on level terms in the 29th minute when Jordan Rhodes scored his first international goal as he headed Danny Fox's cross past Mark Schwarzer.

The Australian keeper was replaced by Reading's Adam Federici at half-time and one of his first tasks was to pick the ball out his net when the unfortunate Jason Davidson, who had only come on two minutes before, headed into his own goal.

Scotland substitute Ross McCormack sealed the win with a superb solo goal in the 76th minute as Scotland gained revenge for the 2-0 defeat Australia dished out to them the last time the sides met 12 years ago.

"There were a lot of good performances tonight. We played like a proper international team and deserved our victory," Scotland coach Craig Levein said.

"What I learned tonight was I have found one or two players who might be able to step in if I have any problems."

Australian head coach Holger Osieck said he was disappointed with defeat.

"Individually and as a team we didn't do today what we are able to do so that was definitely disappointing.

"Even negative things have some positives and the players now know where they stand."

Levein handed Fox his first cap in three years while Rhodes started for the first time.

The Huddersfield striker almost handed a dream start to Scotland after just four minutes when he got on the end of James Morrison's cross but his back-heel attempt failed to trouble Schwarzer.

There controversy in the 19th minute when Holman's shot appeared to be blocked on the line by the hand of Fox before being turned out for a corner but referee Tom Hagen waved away their penalty protests.

The Soceroos players were still complaining when Bresciano put them ahead seconds later with a sensational strike from the resultant corner. The ball was headed clear by Gary Caldwell to the feet of Bresciano, who unleashed a superb dipping volley from 25 yards that flew past Allan McGregor from 20 yards.

Things got worse for Scotland when the keeper had to be replaced minutes later after picking up a knock allowing Blackpool stopper Matt Gilks to make his debut.

Scotland hauled themselves level in the 29th minute with a first international goal for Rhodes, who stopped to glance a header past Schwarzer from Fox's cross.

Holman hobbled off after a trip from Caldwell to be replaced by former Celtic striker Scott McDonald at half-time while Schwarzer was replaced by Adam Federici to hand the Reading keeper a rare cap.

However, it was the Scotland keeper who was busier at the start of the second-half with Gilks doing well to tip Luke Wilkshire's shot over the bar in the 57th minute.

Scotland took the lead in the 63rd minute through an own goal when Davidson, who had only replaced David Carney two minutes before, headed Fox's chipped cross past the helpless Federici.

Scotland increased their lead with a goal from sub McCormack in the 76th minute. The Leeds United forward robbed Carl Valeri of possession in the Australian half before twisting and turning on the edge of the box and sending a low angled shot past Federici.

Hearts player Ryan McGowan was handed his first Australian cap and Ian Black, who now plays in the Scottish Third Division for Rangers, replaced Caldwell late on to make his Scotland debut.

?You don?t know too many people who dream of something all their lives and it comes true,? says author Selden Edwards on the publication of his second novel, The Lost Prince. Edwards is referring to himself, and the dream that he mentions ? of becoming a successful fiction writer ? is something that happened to him after retirement. That?s when his first novel, The Little Book, went from being a lifelong project (begun in 1974, it was not finished until 2007) to the subject of a publisher?s bidding war, and finally, a New York Times?listed best-seller. Both The Little Book and The Lost Prince, volumes one and two of a projected trilogy, proceed from the premise that Wheeler Burden, Harvard baseball hero, philosopher, and rock star, has the ability to travel back from California in 1988 to Vienna, Austria, circa 1897. The action that follows from this rent in the fabric of time brings together such historical figures as Sigmund Freud, Gustav Mahler, and William James with the Burden clan, who are strictly the product of Edwards? remarkable?imagination.

Of course, when your first book takes more than 30 years to write, you could be forgiven for phoning in the second, but Edwards is clearly not built that way. ?Right after Dutton bought The Little Book, I came up with the idea for a trilogy, and I got going immediately on this sequel,? he told me. ?I put two and a half years of energy into it, and, as you know, second books are notoriously difficult things to complete, so it was a real?challenge.?

In The Lost Prince, the philosopher William James acts as a guardian for Eleanor, who must live with the time-defying secret at the core of the trilogy. ?I did a PhD at Pacifica in the late 1990s,? Edwards said, ?and I?m incredibly grateful for my time there, which allowed me to delve not only into James but also into the works of Carl Jung, who became another of the major characters in this?book.?

With all due respect to Jung, here?s to dreams ? deferred but not denied. Selden Edwards will be signing The Lost Prince at Chaucer?s Books (3321 State St.) on Wednesday, August 22, at 7 p.m. Call 682-4067 or visit seldenedwards.com for?info.
