CA: California's lethal injections

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: www.stateline.org --- Tuesday, December 27, 2011
In 2006, a federal district court ordered California to stop executing people because the state's three-drug protocol for lethal injection lacked "reliability." Six of the 11 men executed by lethal injection in the state since 1978 may have suffered cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the Constitution because the injection inflicted "excessive pain," Judge Jeremy Fogel found. ...

Tar Heels fall with a thud in interim coach's last game

SHREVEPORT, La. -- After North Carolina's 41-24 defeat against Missouri in the Independence Bowl on Monday, Everett Withers walked into the locker room for the final time as North Carolina's coach. He said he told his players he loved them.

He referenced the drama the Tar Heels have experienced in the past two seasons - an NCAA investigation, the firing of coach Butch Davis - and Withers said he told his team to carry on the lessons they learned from those trying times. The Tar Heels had desperately wanted to give Withers a victory in his finale.

But their trip to Independence Stadium didn't come with an ending fit for storybooks. Instead, North Carolina (7-6) gave an abysmal performance - especially on defense.

As much as the Tar Heels talked about winning for Withers, they lacked the effort - and the execution - necessary for the desired outcome.

"You know, you always want to go out with a win," Withers said. "Regardless, you always want to win your last one. Doesn't always work out that way for you. So you just move on."

Withers will move on to Ohio State, where he will serve as co-defensive coordinator. And the Tar Heels, when they return from winter break, will move on to the Larry Fedora era. The former Southern Mississippi coach will begin his official duties in Chapel Hill on Jan. 9.

But most North Carolina players weren't in the mood to talk about the future Monday night.

"I'm still lingering on this game," said freshman running back Gio Bernard. "I think (the future) really won't kick in until we get back ... and start talking to the new coaching staff and things like that. ...

"But for the most part, this entire break that we have coming up, I think I'll be lingering on this game."

Bernard had been dominant at times this season, but Missouri held him to 31 yards on 13 carries. North Carolina, meanwhile, had no answer for the Tigers' running game.

Missouri (8-5) gained 337 yards rushing and averaged 7.3 yards per carry.

The Tar Heels arrived in Shreveport with a rushing defense that ranked 14th nationally, but they were confused and often out of position against the Tigers' spread-option ground game.

James Franklin, the Missouri quarterback, gained 142 yards on 18 carries. Kendial Lawrence added 108 yards rushing. Franklin and Lawrence combined to run for half of Missouri's six touchdowns.

The Tar Heels started fast and led 7-0 lead after Bryn Renner's 22-yard touchdown pass to Dwight Jones. But Missouri answered with 31 consecutive points and led 31-10 at halftime.

"We had momentum and then really just couldn't get things going," Renner said.

Renner spoke with emotion about the Tar Heels' failure to win - their failure to do much of anything - in Withers' final game.

When it was over, Withers walked quickly to midfield to shake hands with Missouri coach Gary Pinkel, and then Withers hurried off the field.

His tenure as North Carolina's interim coach was over.

"I just take away what we went through to get to this point," said Renner, who passed for 317 yards and three touchdowns. "We went through a lot this season and showed the character of our coaching staff and these players and this team. I can't say enough about this team."

He and his teammates, though, had more difficulty explaining this defeat.

The Tar Heels promised they wouldn't lack motivation in Withers' final game - that they also wanted to put on a good show for their future coach, Fedora.

Instead North Carolina walked off the field with a disappointing end to a disappointing era.

Something Rare: TRON

I watched TRON: Legacy a few nights ago and an idea started to form into my head. A sandbox (free roam) based roleplay about the city of the grid. Set about 20 years (like, 150 cycles..?) after TRON: Legacy so a lot of the tech is updated but not much so as to keep with the TRON universe and not go overboard. I hope I can snag somebody who is rather versed with TRON to help me along with the tech and story as I'm no expert. Although things will be different since its set in the future and I don't have a story set yet. With hope, we can collaborate on how to form the overall story and not make it "just another empty sandbox". So far, I have an idea about a "Rise of the hackers" but thats about it actually.

Hopefully, with all luck, almost any weapon you can think of, from the chakram Identity disk to a claymore to a pistol to a machinegun. A lot of free expression to go along with your characters will be allowed too. As long as you can back it up, it can be done.

Instead of some useless quote, I'm putting my dawning Roleplay ideas here in my Sig. If you see something you like. Message me and we'll talk.

Hmm, digital world, light cycles, users. TRON. Ideas are sprouting my friends

Rich Chinese couple's 8 babies spark anger

A rich Chinese couple who had eight babies with the help of two surrogate mothers has been forced to move out of their villa following a public uproar and could face a large fine for breaching strict family planning laws mandating only one child.

The couple in the booming southern metropolis of Guangzhou had the children last year, according to state media, but the story only came to light after a picture of the children ? four boys and four girls ? was used by a photography studio in an advertisement.

The story was first featured in the Guangzhou Daily on Monday. The English-language website China Daily carried a picture of what appeared to be the eight babies, credited to the newspaper, although with part of their faces blurred.

A separate China Daily report quoted a photographer surnamed Li from the photo studio, QQ Baby, in the Tianhe district of Guangzhou.

"The photo shoot was a mess," he said. "Some of the babies were crying, some were sleepy, while the others were crawling around."?

Li said that after a whole afternoon's hard work, only a dozen photos had been taken, and just two of those were satisfactory.

The octuplets, four boys and four girls, now have 11 nannies, with eight caring for them, two cleaning the house and one preparing food, the report said.

Reuters said the couple turned to in vitro fertilization after years of trying to have children and spent nearly $157,800 (one million yuan) on the procedure, state television reported.

The mother had three of the children herself, and the other five with two surrogates, though the couple had not intended to have so many.

After the babies were born last September and October, the couple hired 11 people, including eight baby sitters and a teacher, to take care of them, state television cited neighbors as saying.

The provincial government has set up a team to investigate the case, media added, especially as most people in China are only allowed to have one child.

"Why did they have to hire so many people to have babies for them? Did they think they had the right to bear children just because they were rich? This was their first mistake," Liao Xinbo, Guangdong's deputy health chief, told state channel CCTV.

"Secondly, what respect to life did they show? Multiple pregnancies are super risky."

A family-planning official added that the couple may face a big fine for breaching the one-child policy.

However, some Chinese media have suggested that the couple may not have done the procedures in China, and that the children could have been born in Hong Kong, in which case they would escape punishment in the mainland.

The issue has triggered heated debate on China's Twitter-like microblogs.

"I don't understand why such law-breakers can still be left alone. Because they are rich, they can have as many babies as they like? That would create chaos!" wrote "Lingning" on Sina's Weibo.

"The case shows the worsening wealth gap in China. The rich, with their money in hand, are shattering social equality," added "A Late 2011."

However, some expressed a degree of sympathy and even envy.

"When I am rich enough, I will have two or three babies," wrote "Sha Guola."

China introduced its one-child policy in 1979 to limit births in the world's most populous nation. It has relaxed the rules somewhat in the past few years and some couples are now allowed to have a second child.

Debt discussions ongoing after lenders reject restructuring plan, says Eircom

Debt discussions ongoing after lenders reject restructuring plan, says Eircom

Saturday, December 24, 2011

EIRCOM has said it is proceeding with detailed discussions with its first-lien lenders regarding their restructuring proposal for the group.

Eircom said its board informed the company?s majority owner, Singapore Technologies Telemedia (STT), that a majority of first-lien lenders rejected a plan put forward by the Singapore company. STT-nominated directors have resigned from the Eircom board with immediate effect, Eircom said in a statement.

Eircom chairman Ned Sullivan said that "after many months of deliberation", the announcement "provides an environment of certainty for all the parties to move forward with the restructuring process".

STT said in a separate statement it had withdrawn its proposal and was disappointed the lenders didn?t accept it.

On Thursday, Moody?s downgraded the parent of Eircom, saying the position of its creditors was deteriorating due to a weak Irish economy and delays in a proposed restructuring deal.

Laden with debt and suffering from under-investment since its privatisation in 1999, Eircom is in talks with lenders about restructuring its ?3.75bn debt.

Moody?s cut ERC Ireland Finance?s probability of default rating to Ca, or highly speculative, from Caa3.

It said the group?s loss-given default ? how much of its loan would be written off if they go bad ? was around 35% if a consensual restructuring is achieved.

"Today?s rating action reflects Moody?s concerns that the potential recovery pros-pects for Eircom?s creditors could be lower than previously anticipated by the rating agency," said Ivan Palacios of Moody?s.

A spokesperson for the first-lien committee said: "The key focus for the first lien is to restructure Eircom?s balance sheet so that the company?s management plan can be implemented as a matter of urgency."

The spokesperson added: "The first-lien solution firmly aligns the interests of debt and equity holders and extends the maturity profile of Eircom?s restructured debt to 2017."

Turkey and France in growing confrontation over French ?genocide bill?

Turkey and France traded barbs Thursday, with the Turkish ambassador recalled from Paris. Turkey also suspended all? bilateral political, economic and military cooperation.

The French National Assembly today passed a controversial bill penalizing anyone who denies the Armenian genocide by Ottoman forces almost a century ago.??

The bill, which now has to be voted on by the Senate, provoked a furious Turkish reaction. ?Ankara is recalling its ambassador to France while freezing official contacts between the two countries.?

?We are recalling our ambassador in Paris to Ankara for consultations," said Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, Associated Press reports.?

Ankara lobbied hard for the French government to shelve the bill and warned? of potential retaliatory measures. Earlier this week, a delegation of Turkish MPs and businessmen visited Paris to request that the government of President Nicolas Sarkozy abandon the bill.

"As of now, we are canceling bilateral level political, economic and military activities," Mr. Erdogan said. "We are suspending all kinds of political consultations with France" and "bilateral military cooperation, joint maneuvers are canceled as of now," he added.

Erdogan said that he will annul any permissions given to French military vessels to dock at Turkish ports and would consider on a case-by-case basis requests for military overflights and landings. ?The Turkish prime minister said that?"This decision is cause for concern not only for France where there are efforts to make gains through enmity toward Turks and Turkey, and in general terms, through Islamophobia, but also for Europe and principles defended by Europe."

The French bill requires a prison term of up to one year and a fine of $58,000 (45,000 euros) to anyone who publicly denies the mass killings of the Armenians during World War I.? In 2001, France officially recognized the ?Armenian genocide? but a subsequent parliamentary effort to criminalize it was dropped by the Senate.

"It is important, in the current context, that we keep the paths of dialogue and cooperation open," French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said in a statement.

French lawmakers were vexed over what they saw as Turkish interference into the country?s internal affairs.

Festivus tidings: Airing some TV grievances about 'Community,' 'Mad Men' and more

festivus-tv-grievances.jpgDec. 23 is a holy day for TV nerds like us, for it is the day we celebrate Festivus.

The made-up holiday entered our consciousness thanks to "Seinfeld" writer Daniel O'Keefe, who based a December 1997 episode he wrote on experiences he had growing up. (You can go here to watch a collection of clips from the episode.) The ceiling in the Zap2it office is too low for a properly majestic aluminum pole, and liability concerns led us to scrap the feats of strength.

But we can still air some grievances. We covered some of our gripes with the current TV landscape in our "We're over it" gallery last week, but we'd like to expand on a couple of those and talk about some of the other ways TV has disappointed us this year.

You've heard us and many others complain about the indefinite benching of "Community" and "Cougar Town." But what's most disappointing, NBC and ABC scheduling and PR teams, is that at least a little of the outrage could have been avoided. We still would have been upset not to see those shows on your respective midseason schedules, but we would have gotten about 10 to 15 percent less worked up had you simply included a line like, "These shows will return in the spring." Would that have really been so hard?

While we're at it, ABC, "Work It"? Seriously? (Consider this a pre-aired grievance for 2012.)

AMC, first let us start by saying thank you for a season of "Breaking Bad" so good that it pretty well makes up for the non-ending of "The Killing." But we're still a little peeved that your drawn-out negotiations over the future of "Mad Men" meant a full year without new episodes of the series. And by the way, how's about cluing us in on a premiere date?

The "We're over it" gallery pretty well covered our loathing of two-hour reality shows, but we'd like to mention it just again. For a premiere or a finale? Sure. Every week? No, no and no.

We understand, Showtime, that you may have felt "United States of Tara" had run its course after three seasons, and we know its ratings were not very good. But that third season was so fantastic, and Toni Collette so great in it, that we really wish you could have found a way to make even an abbreviated fourth season work.

Finally, The CW, we haven't entirely forgiven you for "H8R." Sure, we had some laughs making fun of it, and we applaud the TV-watching public for realizing it wasn't worth their time. But the three episodes you aired were three too many.

What TV-based grievances do you have this Festivus?

Obama campaign, Dems set $60M fundraising goal (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama's re-election campaign and the Democratic Party have set a combined fundraising goal of $60 million for the final three months of 2011, an amount that would help them surpass $200 million for 2011.

Obama's campaign and the Democratic National Committee have collected $156 million through the end of September and would easily push past $200 million if the goal is met. The campaign and DNC raised about $70 million from July through late September.

The campaign and DNC have not yet met the fundraising goals but the president is not expected to participate in any fundraising events for the remainder of the year, a campaign official told The Associated Press. The official spoke on condition of anonymity and was not authorized to speak publicly.

Obama told top fundraisers recently that his re-election is not a "slam dunk" because many people are grappling with unemployment and the aftermath of the housing meltdown. He said his campaign would put forth a "vision that is truest to our history and most representative of the core decency of the American people."

Campaign officials expect the eventual Republican nominee to be competitive with Obama on fundraising, given the role of super PACs, independent groups that may accept unlimited donations but are not supposed to directly coordinate with candidates. Leading Republican contenders Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich have not yet outlined fundraising goals for the quarter.

Obama headlined 15 campaign fundraising events in October through December, about half the number of events he participated in during the first three months of his re-election campaign. The campaign has offered a "Dinner with Barack and Michelle" to boost campaign contributions online, allowing donors the chance to enter a drawing to have dinner with the first couple. The move followed a "Dinner with Barack" promotion earlier in the year.

Obama departed Washington on Friday to begin a delayed vacation in Hawaii.

How to Deal With People Who Cut in Line [Video]

How to Deal With People Who Cut in LineHow to Deal With People Who Cut in Line If you've lived in the world you've waited in a line, and at some point in your life?if not many?someone has cut in the line and made you wait longer. There are a variety of line cutters, some with good reasons and others without, but it's generally infuriating all the same. Here's how to deal with people who cut in line, regardless of the situation.

Analyze the Line

How to Deal With People Who Cut in LineWhen people wait in line, in essence they're gathering one behind the other in single file?or at least that's how it's supposed to work. Unfortunately, not every line is created equal. Some curve because there's not enough room for a straight line in the store, or some waiting areas are larger than others?such as the ones at amusement parks?to accommodate groups waiting together. Lines at stores will occasionally offer some sort of designated method of organization, even sometimes offering a hired helper to move things along efficiently. Other stores will just let their customers figure things out on their own. Sometimes it's the worst of both worlds, such as boarding a flight, where an organization scheme is offered that's hardly followed. It's in situations lacking this organization that the problems tend to occur most often, but are also the type of situations that require the most sympathy. When there is a seemingly tacit organization, it's very, very easy for any person to misinterpret the rules of the line. Before you make any decisions about what to do, know what kind of line you're in. If the instructions are clear, you can point them out. If they're not, you may just want to let the issue go. In the event you do want to say something to the cutter, however, tread carefully. It may have been an honest mistake.

Resist the Urge to Get Angry

How to Deal With People Who Cut in LinePeople make mistakes often, so you don't want to bite their heads off. Back in college, I was waiting in line for 20 minutes to make a deposit at the school ATM. It always had a ridiculous single-file line, but it was a half of a mile to the next ATM. Another student pulled a chat and cut in front of me (see the video up top for a demonstration) very early on in the line and I didn't say anything because I thought he was talking to his friends. When he tried to use the ATM, I'd built up so much anger that I lashed out at him. The entire line then got mad at me, because he played the victim. In retrospect, I think he honestly had no idea I was in line. I tend to be quiet and easy to miss if I don't intend to be heard. When I angrily told him I was there first and I thought he was just talking to his friends, the rest of the line suddenly saw a raging little asshole emerge from the ether. Although I earned my rightful spot back in line, it was with an angry mob at my back. When you bring anger into the situation, don't expect things to work in your favor.

Know the Three Rules of Confronting Line Cutters

How to Deal With People Who Cut in LineWhen you do want to approach a line cutter to let them know they just violated the sacred social code of waiting, it's important to remember the following three things:

  1. Don't get angry. (See above for an explanation why.)
  2. Ask someone near by?preferably behind you?if they saw that person cut in the line. If they did, you now have an ally who has a vested interest in the outcome of the situation.
  3. Confront the cutter as soon as possible. You'll lose your chance if you wait.

How to Deal With People Who Cut in LineWhen you confront the line cutter, be polite. It's possible they made a mistake and you'll feel like an idiot and a jerk if you overreact to something that's ultimately not a big deal. A simple sentence like, "Excuse me, but I believe you just cut in line" is forceful enough to get your point across while still remaining open to the possibility that you could be wrong and they were simply joining their friend to wait with them in solidarity. In the event that they argue and things get out of hand, you either need to let it go (if the cutter is willing to drop the issue, too) or find a manager/person of authority and ask them to handle the problem for you. But something as unimportant as a person cutting in line should really never escalate to that level. The important thing to remember is that while it's rude for people to cut in line, you can't fight every battle and there are few circumstances where this situation isn't a tiny blip of a battle. Most of the time, it's simply not worth fighting. Stay strong, and just try to let things go whenever you can.

More Advice From You

How to Deal With People Who Cut in LineI put the dilemma of line cutting out on the social networks the other day to see what you all had to say about the matter. Here's a selection of the advice from the crowd.

Saul suggests a veiled threat:

If it's a man, I say "don't cut," and if he argues I say "I have a gun."

Matt McCormick suggests giving them a taste of their own medicine and pretending like they don't exist either:

If they cut me, I will act like I didn't see them and walk into them. Even better if I have loud big shopping bags.

Luis Sierra says just deal with it:

I usually don't care, I've learned to be a bit more patient when I can. People can be in a rush, scumbags, or just stupid. Chill.

Mikayla Schneiter takes the simple approach:

A simple, polite, I'm-trying-to-be-helpful-here "Hey man, the line starts back there, just so you know" should cut it. There are a lot of situations that could make it look like someone's trying to cut in line, when in reality s/he's making an honest mistake or doing something pretty irrelevant.

And my cousin Max Gold explains what to do when a drunk guy cuts in front of you at a taco truck:

A drunk guy cut me at a taco truck the other night. He was a lot bigger than me. He explained that in many cities, that it's okay to cut people. I asked what cities? He said New York. I said no, it's not okay there either. Then he said "oh, it's not?" and apologized and bought me a taco.

Got any of your own advice on dealing with the notorious line cutter? Let's hear it in the comments!

Researchers writing in Pediatrics found that of more than 2,000 Swedish children they followed to the age of eight, those who were overweight or obese at age seven were more likely to have asthma than their thinner peers.

By contrast, children who were heavy as toddlers or at age four, but not at age seven, were no more prone to asthma than children who'd always been of normal weight.

"High body mass index (BMI) during the first 4 years does not increase the risk of asthma at school age among children who have developed a normal weight by age seven," wrote Jessica Magnusson, at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, who led the study.

"However, high BMI at age seven years is associated with an increased risk of asthma and sensitization to inhalant allergens."

Body mass index is a measure of weight relative to height.

A number of studies have found that heavy children have a higher risk of asthma, or more severe symptoms, but whether the extra pounds are the cause remains unclear.

"We don't think we can say that overweight is causally associated with asthma -- that is, that overweight causes asthma," Magnusson said.

Overall, six percent of the eight-year-olds followed in the study had asthma, while 10 percent of the children who were overweight at age seven did.

The researchers considered other factors, such as the parents' history of allergies and whether a mother smoked during pregnancy. They found that being overweight at age seven was linked to a doubling in the risk of asthma.

That was true of seven-year-olds who'd been of normal weight earlier in life, as well as those who'd been heavy at age four.

At any age, there were about 300 children of the 2,000 who were overweight, but fewer were persistently heavy. Only some 122 remained overweight from the age of one to age seven.

So parents should feel reassured, Magnusson said, that those early extra pounds often do not last -- and that children whose weight normalizes may not have an increased asthma risk. SOURCE: http://bit.ly/tVwsye

NASA Mulls More Missions for the SLS, a Return to the Moon (ContributorNetwork)

NASA Spaceflight has published a new piece concerning the development of an exploration road map that focuses on the moon. There seems to be a growing interest in the space community for such a goal, despite President Barack Obama's desires.

The article contains more information from the November Human Space Exploration Community Workshop on the Global Exploration Roadmap. There is some interesting information coming to light on what are called Design Reference Missions using the Space Launch System that go beyond servicing the exploration program.

What is being contemplated for the Space Launch System?

One of the criticisms of the Space Launch System is the claim that it would only be launched once or twice a year. NASA seems to have taken this criticism to heart and has come up with a number of other missions the SLS could accommodate besides beyond low Earth orbit exploration.

For example, there is some discussion of using the SLS to launch an Orion to the International Space Station should the commercial crew program falter. This is the role the Ares 1 would have been used for initially under the now cancelled Constellation program.

The SLS could also be used for a number of planetary and commercial missions. A sample return mission to Europa, a moon of Jupiter, was mentioned. Also the SLS could launch large commercial space stations into low Earth orbit, much as the Saturn V launched Skylab in the early 1970s.

All of this is designed to reduced launch costs and to keep ground crews experienced in processing the SLS.

What about the Moon?

A conventional return to the moon would involve two launches of the 130 metric ton version of the SLS, pushing that mission into the late 2020s. This mission would launch the lunar lander and a propulsion system into lunar orbit. Then, about 120 days later, the Orion and another propulsion system would be launched into lunar orbit and would dock with the lunar lander. The crew would transfer to the lunar lander and proceed to the surface.

Therefore more interest seems to be focusing on a concept being developed by Boeing of using a way station at one of the Lagrange points where the Earth and moon's gravity cancel one another out. It is thought that this approach could result in a much earlier return to the moon.

According to a document provided by NASA, such a way station would be build primarily of ISS style modules at the International Space Station and then, after a period of testing, it would be boosted to either the L1 or L2 points. The way station would provide a platform for, among other things, a reusable lunar lander that could fly between it and the lunar surface. A crew would fly to the way station on an SLS boosted Orion Multi Purpose Crew Vehicle, transfer to the reusable lander, and then proceed to the lunar surface.

Mark R. Whittington is the author of Children of Apollo and The Last Moonwalker. He has written on space subjects for a variety of periodicals, including The Houston Chronicle, The Washington Post, USA Today, the L.A. Times and The Weekly Standard.

Imprisoned activist's daughter detained in Bahrain (AP)

MANAMA, Bahrain ? A daughter of a prominent Bahraini activist was detained during an anti-government demonstration in the Gulf kingdom, which has been roiled by months of protests and crackdowns.

Zainab al-Khawaja, a 28-year-old blogger and activist, was arrested late Thursday during a rally outside the capital, Manama, said Nabeel Rajab, the president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights. The government confirmed her arrest in a statement Friday.

She is a daughter of Bahrain's most prominent political activist, Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, who was imprisoned for life along with seven other opposition leaders in June. A special security tribunal, set up under emergency rule, convicted them of anti-state crimes.

A video purportedly of her arrest shows a female officer handcuffing al-Khawaja as she sits in the middle of a traffic circle. Another female officer appears to punch her in the face before both officers drag her by her handcuffs to a police vehicle. It was impossible to verify the veracity of the video, which was posted online, but the scene matched a description given by the government.

The rally, which began on Thursday near the opposition stronghold of Diraz and other Shiite villages west of the capital, was marked with clashes as Bahraini security forces used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse hundreds of opposition supporters attempting to protest alongside a highway leading to Manama.

On Friday, clashes between riot police and anti-government protesters occurred on the same highway after police fired tear gas at a funeral procession for a protester who opposition supporters say died during Thursday's rally. Witnesses said the protester was run over by a police car.

Bahrain's Interior Ministry denied police were responsible for the man's death. In a statement late Thursday, the ministry said a pedestrian it identified as 22-year-old Ali Ahmed Radhi was fatally injured in a traffic accident that involved a civilian vehicle. Its driver is in custody, the statement said.

The clashes took place during a visit by the U.S. State Department's top human rights envoy, who expressed concern about Bahrain's use of tear gas and other tactics against the Shiite protesters. Bahrain's majority Shiites have been campaigning for greater rights from the Sunni monarchy since February.

In a statement on al-Khawaja's arrest, Bahrain's Information Affairs Authority said she was taken into custody for her "role in a larger illegal gathering in a busy roundabout on one of the main roads outside Manama."

The statement said female police officers were sent to the roundabout to clear it of protesters and make the arrest.

"In the process of getting her into the police vehicle, al-Khawaja resisted arrest by laying down and female officers had to physically remove her from the site," the statement said, adding that police have referred the blogger's case to the public prosecutor.

Along with her father, al-Khawaja's three other male relatives have been convicted in court and imprisoned during Bahrain's uprising. They are her uncle, her brother-in-law and her husband, the father of her 2-year-old daughter. The 28-year-old activist and blogger has campaigned for their release and went on a hunger strike for 10 days earlier this year to protest their detention.

More than 35 people have died in clashes and protest-related violence since February. Bahrain's protests, which grew out of the Arab Spring uprisings around the Middle East, are the largest and most sustained to have hit the Arab monarchies and sheikdoms that line the Persian Gulf.

On Thursday, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Michael Posner, head of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, called on both the government and protesters to refrain from violence. As host to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, Bahrain is strategically important to the United States.

Posner told reporters in the capital, Manama, that Washington remains concerned about the government's "excessive use of force, including tear gas, in response to ongoing street protests."

Did You Review Your Whole Facebook Timeline Before Publishing It?

Facebook Time BombReally? The whole thing? You probably didn't, but you should because there are things you posted long ago that you might not want people to see. I sincerely worry that all over the world, this is happening right now: "Oh look, a new Facebook profile design. Grrr, I dislike change, but it looks cool. There's a 7 day preview period? But all my friends are showing off their pretty covers. I'll just publish my Timeline now, and go back and delete embarrassing posts later." But they won't. This is a big problem for individuals and Facebook.

(AP) ? Tropical Storm Washi blew away Sunday after devastating a wide swath of the southern Philippines with flash floods that killed at least 521 people as they slept and turned two coastal cities into a muddy wasteland filled with overturned cars and uprooted trees.

With nearly 500 people missing, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin and top military officials were to fly to the worst-hit city of Cagayan de Oro to help oversee search-and-rescue efforts and deal with thousands of displaced villagers, as the weather began to clear and floodwaters receded. Among the items urgently needed are coffins and body bags, said Benito Ramos, who heads the government's disaster-response agency.

"It's overwhelming. We didn't expect these many dead," Ramos said.

Edmund Rubio, a 44-year-old engineer, said he, his wife and two children scrambled to the second floor of their house in Iligan city as raging floodwaters engulfed the first floor, destroying his TV set and other appliances and washing away his car and motorcycle.

Amid the panic, he heard a loud pounding on his door as his neighbors living in nearby one-story houses pleaded with him to allow them into one of his second-floor rooms. He said he brought 30 of his neighbors into the safety of the second floor of his house, which later shook when a huge, floating log slammed into it.

"It's the most important thing, that all of us will still be together this Christmas," Rubio told The Associated Press. "There was a nearby shantytown that was smashed by water. I'm afraid many people there may not have been as lucky as us."

Army officers reported unidentified bodies piled up in morgues in Cagayan de Oro, where electricity was restored in some areas, although the city of more than 500,000 people remained without tap water.

Philippine Red Cross Secretary General Gwendolyn Pang told the AP that at least 521 people had died in the floods, mostly children and women, and that 458 others were reported missing.

The death toll will most likely rise because many villages remain isolated and unreached by overwhelmed disaster-response personnel. The worst-hit cities were Cagayan de Oro, where at least 239 people died, and nearby Iligan, where Red Cross aid workers reported 195 dead, Pang said.

"Our fear is there may have been whole families that perished so there's nobody to report what happened," Pang said. "Many areas remain isolated and strewn with debris and unreached by rescue teams."

Tropical Storm Washi started to blow away toward the South China Sea on Sunday after slamming into the western province of Palawan, allowing the weather to clear and disaster-response contingents to intensify search-and-rescue work.

Most of the victims were asleep Friday night when raging floodwaters cascaded from the mountains with logs and uprooted trees after 12 hours of rain from the late-season tropical storm in Mindanao. The region is unaccustomed to the typhoons that are common to the north of the Philippine archipelago.

Both Iligan, a bustling industrial center about 485 miles (780 kilometers) southeast of Manila, and Cagayan de Oro were filled with scenes of destruction and desperation.

A swollen river sent floodwaters gushing through neighborhoods that do not usually experience flooding. A man floated in an inner tube in muddy water littered with plastic buckets, pieces of wood and other debris. Ten people in one home stood on a sloping roof, waiting for rescuers even as water still flooded the lower floors.

Local television footage showed muddy water rushing in the streets, sweeping away all sorts of debris. Thick layers of mud coated streets where the waters had subsided. One car was thrown over a concrete fence and others were crushed and piled atop each other in a flooded canal.

Benito Ramos, who heads the government's Office of Civil Defense, attributed the high casualties in Mindanao "partly to the complacency of people because they are not in the usual path of storms" despite four days of warnings by officials that one was approaching.

Thousands of soldiers and hundreds of local police, reservists, coast guard officers and civilian volunteers were mobilized for rescue efforts, but they were hampered by the flooded-out roads and lack of electricity.

Authorities recovered bodies from the mud after the water subsided. Parts of concrete walls and roofs, toppled vehicles and other debris littered the streets.

Rescuers in boats rushed offshore to save people swept out to sea. In Misamis Oriental province, 60 people were plucked from the ocean off El Salvador city, about six miles (10 kilometers) northwest of Cagayan de Oro. Coast guard boats and other rescuers were scouring the waters off Iligan for survivors or bodies that may have been swept away to sea.

In just 12 hours, Washi dumped more than a month of average rains on Mindanao. Forecaster Leny Ruiz said records show that storms that follow the same path as Washi come only once in about every 12 years.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a statement that the Obama administration offered its "deepest condolences" for the devastation in the southern Philippines.

"The U.S. government stands ready to assist Philippine authorities as they respond to this tragedy," the statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected."

93% Drive

Driver: If I drive for you, you give me a time and a place. I give you a five-minute window, anything happens in that five minutes and I'm yours no matter what.I tend to spend most of my time during a film figuring out what is flawed about it, but every once in a while, I am graced with a film where I can sit down and enjoy every minute of it. That's exactly what I got from Drive, a hyper-violent, gruesome, tense, and throughly entertaining film throughout. Not only was it supremely entertaining, it is also wholly original; as well as a masterful lead from indie-guru Ryan Gosling, stylish direction from Nicolas Winding Refn, who all contribute to making Drive one of the best films of the year. Ryan Gosling stars as Driver, who spends his days as a Hollywood stunt driver and a worker and a car repair shop. By night, Driver drives (yep, there will be probably hundreds of uses of the word "drive" in this review) criminals to and from their heist. When a heist involving his neighbors husband who was recently released from prison goes wrong, and the criminals find out who Driver really is, it's time for him to take charge of the situation and to do whatever it takes to get payback and stay alive. I guess the first thing I'll talk about is the fact that it in no way is an action film. It is a tense drama that features some strong violence. There are some defining action moments, but this is mostly a slow paced thriller, which was definitely a brilliant aspect pertaining to the film's style. The first hour or so consists only of strong character development, and a lot of leading up to the last forty minutes where a lot of mindless yet awesome action occurs. The action sequences are arranged quite well. The whole film itself has sort of an art house feel to it, and this action seems pretty gritty, and pretty realistic if I may say. Don't mistake this for another Fast and Furious film, this is its own movie, and the action here is something [similar] to what would really happen in a situation like this. The only thing that was over exemplified was the blood, there was a lot of blood. For anyone who enjoys gruesome films, this is right up your alley. Even if you are into superhero movies, this is for you; according to actor Ryan Gosling (found HERE).Speaking of Ryan Gosling, 2011 seems to be the year of Gosling, as he's starred in the hit romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love (my review can be found HERE), and the upcoming Clooney film The Ides of March. He was also in Blue Valentine, The Notebook, and Lars and the Real Girl. Drive is his best film so far. Even judging by the original trailer, you could tell Gosling would be great. He was spectacular. Seeing Gosling's character strolling down the street, blood stains all over his super-cool Scorpion Jacket is a pleasure to watch. The supporting cast are also definitely great too. I'll start with my favorite of them; Albert Brooks, who switched over from his usual good guy character to a bad-ass man-in-charge, and Brooks' performance is masterful, scary, and sheds some blood. Hellboy star Ron Perlman is also a favorite of mine in this, and is a great addition to an already well-picked cast. The film featured other great performances from Bryan Cranston, Oscar Isaac, Christina Hendricks, and Carey Mulligan. The film gets it's amazingly original arthouse style due to the fantastic direction from acclaimed Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson, Valhalla Rising, and another Ryan Gosling film Only God Forgives). Nicolas's directing style is wholly unique, and wholly original, as well as wholly entertaining, and wholly beautiful. What I love the most about his directing style, as far as indie films go, was not only his lack of complexity (I mean that in a good way), but his arthouse style was very unique. I was absolutely mesmerized by it; it is almost impossible to describe, you have to see it to believe it.Drive is one of the best experiences I've had watching a film. It's always good when a movie ends, and you realize that it was flawless (as well as giving it a huge round of applause, as my theater did). Drive is a very fun, gory, gruesome, but has a sense of tense drama moments (which basically consists of the entire first hour until the hyper-violent era of the film occurs), as well as a mesmerizing performance from Ryan Gosling, and great direction from Nicolas Winding Refn, who all make this film that is destined to become a classic.Driver: When you get your money, his debt's paid. He's out for good and you never go near his family again. You understand?

How not to behave at the office party

What a stressful year. Gyrating markets, high unemployment and a continuing European debt crisis that may augur worldwide economic disaster. You?d think that at the office holiday party you could grab a glass of bubbly, let your hair down and speak your mind.

Don?t do it. The office f?te is not the place for unconstrained chatter. It?s also not the place for personal confession, expressions of frustration or speechifying about what you?d do with the company if you were in charge.

Forbes.com slideshow: See the office party no-nos

Instead, remember that you are at a professional function and behave that way. That means listening as much as talking, keeping your conversation on safe subjects like hobbies, movies or family and deferring to superiors.

?Don?t outshine people who need the spotlight, or hold some aspect of job security in your hands,? advises John Challenger, chief executive of the worldwide outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas. ?The holiday party is a great time to build relationships. Don?t get into behaviors that might cause relationships to deteriorate or be damaged.?

John Bliss, the founder of BlissPR in Manhattan, doesn?t take any chances. For more than 15 years he has insisted that his employees attend a pre-party pizza dinner. He orders enough pies for the 30-member staff at around 4:30 in the afternoon and watches to make sure everyone has a few slices. It?s a guarantee no one will be drinking on an empty stomach.

?It?s like blotting paper,? he says. ?That way, you can have fun without getting embarrassed.? Companies like BlissPR have a lot at stake. When they invite clients to their parties, the last thing they need is a drunken staffer.

More companies are serving alcohol at holiday parties this year, according to an annual survey on holiday celebrations by the executive search firm Battalia Winston Amrop. Seventy-six percent of companies say they plan to serve alcoholic beverages, up from 73 percent last year. Alcohol service hit a high in 2000, when 90 percent of firms offered it, according to the 23 years of Battalia reports.

The dangers of excessive alcohol consumption are well known, but cautionary tales are worth retelling: Annmarie Woods recalls a holiday gathering a few years ago for her sales team at a leading financial services firm. The group began the evening at a downtown restaurant and then headed to a dance club. The evening being celebratory, their boss picked up the bill for a limousine to get them from the restaurant to the club. While en route, one of the staffers vomited into Woods? purse.

?The next day at the meeting, everyone was talking about it. Their opinion of her had been altered,? Woods puts it mildly.

The office party offers a unique opportunity to bond with superiors and colleagues. But don?t blow it. ?If you can?t keep a lid on it, don?t go to it,? Challenger advises.
